Dr. Desziree Richardson

Founder, Women of Heart Awards & Gentlemen of Heart Awards | Motivational Speaker | Voice Healing Advocate

A personal story is the starting point of leadership. That story is always growing silently with time before that impact is felt by the rest of the world. That is the type of path that the journey of Dr. Desziree Richardson is.

Dr. Richardson was born in Anguilla in the Caribbean and is currently based in the United Kingdom. She has established herself as a motivational speaker, entrepreneur, humanitarian and champion of women’s empowerment. Her work has grown over the years across nations and communities to establish platforms that glorify leadership, compassion, and opportunity.

She is the founder of the Women of Heart Awards, which is a recognition initiative globally, where women leaders who are making significant impacts in business, community work, education, and social development are recognized. This and other projects have allowed her to contribute to the establishment of areas where leadership narratives are recognized and made available to more people.

Her other activities involve philanthropy, personal development courses and business. The point is that regardless of whether she is addressing events, promoting humanitarian causes, or implementing new projects, she always has the same point to inspire people to be purposeful and compassionate leaders.

In this interview with Arabian Business Times, Dr. Richardson talks about her early life, the motivation behind her projects, and the reason why she keeps empowering others to drive her efforts.

Amira: Let’s begin with your early journey. What experiences shaped your path toward leadership?

Dr. Desziree Richardson:

My childhood life had a great impact on my present personality. I have been brought up in a big family in Anguilla in the Caribbean, with community and support being significant.

We also had our problems, as most families do. These events taught me to be resilient and responsible at a tender age. You have a strong sense of appreciation for hard work when you grow up experiencing people working hard to make opportunities available to their families.

This is because those experiences influenced my perspective on life. I was taught that the future of a person may be turned another way thanks to the power of will and faith in oneself.

I developed an interest in communication and leadership as I grew up. I liked to interact with others and hear their life stories. This interest later made me seek out educational and professional opportunities overseas.

The decision to relocate to the United Kingdom was an important one. It opened my eyes to other cultures, thoughts and views. My experience in a new setting allowed me to realize that leadership can come from a variety of backgrounds.

It made me even stronger in my ideas that everyone, no matter where they were born, can do something important.

Empowerment through voice and confidence

Amira: Your work now reaches people across different countries. When did you realize you wanted to create global initiatives?

Dr. Desziree Richardson:

The concept itself was built up over time.

I was present in numerous community events and professional meetings in the initial years of my career. Through those experiences, I encountered outstanding people who were engaged in significant activities in their communities.

A lot of them were female leaders of their businesses, mentorship of younger professionals, or even charitable organizations. However, their successes did not always spread further than their circles.

I remember that observation for a long time. I started considering the ways a platform might be developed to showcase those stories and make them more accessible to more people.

Eventually, that thinking led to the creation of the Women of Heart Awards. The purpose was simple. I wanted to recognize women who lead with compassion and strength.

What surprised me most was the response. The initiative quickly attracted attention from women across different industries and countries.

What began as a recognition platform soon grew into an international network of inspiring individuals.

Amira: What makes the Women of Heart Awards unique compared with other recognition programs?

Dr. Desziree Richardson:

The heart of the platform is authenticity.

The awards honor those who are passionate leaders. Numerous recognition programs pay primary attention to financial prosperity or fame. Those achievements are significant, but they are not always enough to give the complete picture of leadership.

The Women of Heart Awards shine a light on the people who are concerned about the people surrounding them. Most of the women identified are teachers, business people, humanitarian heads or community organizers.

Their work is not necessarily reflected in the headlines, but it makes a difference that is real and lasting.

The other significant element of the platform is the worldwide network that it has established. Females of various origins and occupations unite, exchange, and encourage each other.

Such a feeling of community is so strong. It serves as a reminder that leadership is enhanced when individuals work together and support one another.

Amira: You also established the Women of Heart Foundation. How does the foundation support your mission?

Dr. Desziree Richardson:

It is through the foundation that we can do more than recognition and get down to actual support.

The importance of awards is that they are part of the bigger picture. There are still communities that require resources, mentorship and access to opportunities.

We do this through the foundation, where we engage in activities associated with education, leadership development, and humanitarian assistance. These are programs aimed at offering practical assistance where it is most required.

We have, over the years, developed partnerships with organizations, volunteers and community heads in various regions. A simple truth is pointed out in each project.

Leadership may be in a variety of forms. It is sometimes the process of leading a company or organization. On other occasions, it involves assisting a community to become stronger.

The two types of leadership are equally useful.

Leadership with compassion and purpose

Amira: You are also known as a motivational speaker. What message do you most often share with audiences?

Dr. Desziree Richardson:

My message is simple. Believe in your voice.

Some are afraid to take the initiative as they do not believe in their capabilities. They believe that their ideas do not matter or that there is another person who is more competitive to lead.

As a matter of fact, all people have different experiences and knowledge. People can be inspired by those experiences.

As soon as individuals start seeing their potential, something becomes different. They become more confident. They start acting and are more determined to achieve what they want.

I talk at conferences and events and advise people to remain in touch with their purpose. Professional achievements are not the only factors that define success. It is also determined by the good influence we have on other people.

Leadership develops when individuals are ready to support others.

Amira: You later introduced the Gentlemen of Heart Awards. What inspired this initiative?

Dr. Desziree Richardson:
Real progress is achieved through cooperation.

Although the greater part of my work is aimed at women’s empowerment, I think that it is also crucial to acknowledge men who are proactive in terms of equality and opportunity.

The Gentlemen of Heart Awards honor people who possess leadership in terms of respect, mentorship, and advocacy.

These are men who embrace inclusive workplaces, mentor women in their career and enhance fairness in their organizations.

Their contributions are recognized, and this is a clear message. Everyone should be involved in empowerment. In case men and women are working together, the actual change may take place.

Amira: Beyond humanitarian initiatives, you are also an entrepreneur. Tell us about your lifestyle brand.

Dr. Desziree Richardson:

I have never been out of entrepreneurship. Happy Mood Swagger is one of my ventures, which is a lifestyle brand that is focused on positivity and self-expression.

The idea of the brand is simple. The way we dress and the way we portray ourselves can determine our confidence.

Dressing and personal fashion may turn into a type of expression. They are able to show individuality and optimism.

We are trying to spread happiness, creativity, and confidence through Happy Mood Swagger. It is one of the ways of motivating people to show their personality as well as have a positive attitude.

Entrepreneurship is also another way through which I can interact with people and deliver meaningful messages.

Amira: Your work spans leadership initiatives, humanitarian projects, speaking, and entrepreneurship. How do you maintain balance?

Dr. Desziree Richardson:

Purpose is the starting point of balance.

You can also handle the expectations attached to something when you are in touch with the purpose that made you begin in the first place.

Naturally, at times, schedules are extremely hectic. Conducting initiatives and projects in various locations takes time and concern.

However, I never forget the purpose that is to make a difference and open up opportunities to foster positive change. Such thinking makes everything down-to-earth.

It is also important to have supportive teams. Good networks and partnerships can be very instrumental in making sure that projects keep on expanding in a sustainable manner.

Amira: You have received numerous international recognitions. What do those honors represent to you?

Dr. Desziree Richardson:

I never dislike being recognized and appreciated.

Nonetheless, personal interactions are usually the most rewarding.

In some cases, someone might tell about how a program inspired them or got them going in their career. Such discussions bring me to the reasons why this work is important.

Awards are used to celebrate success, yet the true worth is the change made in communities.

When people come together to support each other and share opportunities, the results can be powerful.

Inspiring portrait with empowering message

Amira: Finally, what advice would you offer aspiring women leaders?

Dr. Desziree Richardson:

The initial recommendation is to believe in yourself.

The problem is that many skilled females are afraid of taking a step forward as they are not sure about their skills. Confidence comes as time and experience go by, and it starts with believing in yourself.

The second recommendation is to establish effective networks. When difficulty occurs, mentors, colleagues and supportive peers can offer guidance and encouragement.

And lastly, be in touch with your purpose. Leadership does not merely consist of titles or positions.

It concerns the change that you bring into the lives of other people.

By inspiring through their passion and willpower, people make a difference and leave a legacy for future generations.

Final Thoughts

The life of Dr. Desziree Richardson is a story of leadership philosophy that is founded on the principles of compassion, recognition, and teamwork.

She keeps inspiring people all over the world to become purpose-driven leaders through her programs like the Women of Heart Awards, humanitarian programs and entrepreneurship.
Her work shows that leadership is not necessarily initiated with big goals. It can begin with a simple concept of acknowledging individuals who are making a difference.

Communities develop, networks are created, and new opportunities are created out of that conception. And by doing so, even more individuals have the heart to lead.
