Once in a while a founder’s narrative can not just power a business; it charts a movement. One such figure is Ambe Fidelis Ndang, a Cameroonian where he’s the Founder and Chairman of EFG-HUB Technologies. His life story is that of someone who grew up in a family of discipline and opportunity deficit, and has since become the backbone of an ecosystem of trade, technology, media, logistics, training & automotive innovation in Dubai that’s all registered with him, and his ultimate success is the testimony to Africa’s part in the global economy.
In a special interview with Arabian Business Times, Ndang explains his childhood in Cameroon, how he came to Dubai as an African businessman, the pivotal moment that led him to found EFG-HUB and the philosophy that continues to define the ecosystem comprising eight interwoven sectors. In addition he recounts his own downfalls, his thoughts on representation, and some tips he would give to the next generation of African entrepreneurs.
Q1. Growing Up in Cameroon: Where the Vision Began
You were born in Cameroon and are now building a global ecosystem from Dubai. Take us back to the beginning — what was life like growing up, and when did you first realize entrepreneurship was your path?
Ambe Fidelis Ndang: Born in Cameroon, ‘in a community which gave me early lessons in discipline, patience, humility and resilience,’ Ndang begins. “In my childhood, I was exposed to the beauty of African talent, but also the barrier many experience when there’s limited opportunities.”
It was this awareness of what might be possible – and what was impossible – that made him an entrepreneur. The beginning of my entrepreneurial spirit became shining light on those gaps. Many people don’t fail because they are unskilled, a lot of people fail because they are not given certain access, structural frameworks, guidance, or platforms. That was part of the lesson that I learned that still stayed in me, and eventually shaped my vision.
Entrepreneurship meant much more to Ndang than simply improving their own lives. When I realized one day that person didn’t want to just work for a living, I wanted to make a system that would be able to make a living for others.
It became the philosophy of EFG-HUB Technologies to distinguish itself between working to survive and working to create opportunity.
Q2. Why Dubai? The Realities of Relocating as an African Entrepreneur
Moving to the UAE is a bold decision for any African entrepreneur. What pushed you to choose Dubai specifically, and what were the real challenges you faced when you first arrived?
Ambe Fidelis Ndang: Ndang designed Dubai as his choice for a start. So, ‘I picked Dubai because it’s one of the most powerful African connect points – connecting Africa, the Gulf, Asia, Europe, and investors’. So, here’s what an African entrepreneur with an international perspective considers: access, credibility, logistics, innovation and exposure.
It was not easy at the start. The initiation of the business wasn’t so smooth—Like entrepreneurs, I experienced difficulties regarding adaptation, cost of living, business setup, competition, confidence building, and understanding of the new market; I had to learn fast, be patient, and prove myself consistently.
Dubai showed him something in his lesson. Dubai is a place that instilled in me the need for discipline, structure and compliance, as well as vision. And courage, to continue when facing the uphill.
Q3. The Defining Moment: “I Am Going to Build EFG-HUB”
Many people dream of building something big but never act on it. What was the defining moment that made you say, “I am going to build EFG-HUB,” and what did you risk to start it?
Ambe Fidelis Ndang: It was not a sudden flash of an idea, but a continuing and nagging question. “Breaking the moment happened when I decided to understand that Africa had talent, resources, suppliers, entrepreneurs and youth, many, but they were out of the loop of the options of the world.”
I am constantly wondering, why do we, as African entrepreneurs, keep being ignored when there is an entire world out there seeking new markets, products, talent, innovation? “That question turned into a personal one,” he said.
That was not enough – it took a brain to turn a question into a company. To develop EFG-HUB, I had to take a risk, make an investment in my time, resources, reputation, energy and belief – an investment which must sometimes start before opportunities are perfect.
The founding moment, he sums up simply, “It was about time someone decided not to just talk about change, and start creating the platform for it, and the change found itself in EFG-HUB”.
Q4. “Enterprise of the Future Generation”: Who EFG-HUB Is Really For
The name EFG stands for “Enterprise of the Future Generation.” Who are the future generations you are thinking about when you work every day?
Ambe Fidelis Ndang: The name is not a brand, it is a call to action. The young people in Africa, in the Gulf, in emerging markets are the people with talent I think of when I think about the future generations, I think about those who don’t have access to opportunity.
He specifies the people who he means. I imagine the young student getting direction, the small supplier seeking access to international customers, the entrepreneur with entrepreneurial ideas who is lacking direction about how to structure it, and the new graduate student trying to become a part of the digital future.
“EFG-HUB is for them, it’s about creating a platform that is not just for those years, but for future years’ trade, technology, innovation, leadership and participation in the global forum.
Q5. African Identity and Leadership in the Gulf
As an African founder operating in the Gulf, you sit between two worlds. How has your African identity shaped your leadership style, and do you ever feel the responsibility of representing a larger story?
Ambe Fidelis Ndang: According to Ndang, one’s African identity is the foundation of one’s leadership approach. My view of myself as an African leader has been formed based on the African identity which is passed on to me which includes resilience, community, patience, respect, building with purpose, etc.
Keeping his honest opinion of the responsibilities of a watchdog. As an African founder in the Gulf, I do feel our duty to represent a wider story; I know when I come here, I’m not just bringing myself; I’m bringing the story of Africans who are capable, serious, innovative and ready for international partnerships.
That responsibility inspires me and I would like EFG-HUB to prove that Africa isn’t just a place of difficulties; it is a place of opportunity, a place of talent, a place of trade, a place of creativity, a place of growth.
Q6. Running Eight Sectors as One Ecosystem
You are building across eight different sectors. Most founders struggle to manage even one business. How do you maintain clarity, discipline, and focus across all of it?
Ambe Fidelis Ndang: With regard to Ndang, her reply is structural. To keep my focus, see the divisions as one system, and not eight distinct businesses.
He discusses the relationship of how each is helping the other. But for each division there is a role, logistics is important for trade, cybersecurity is key for technology, training is essential for entrepreneurs, branding for businesses, structure for institutions, markets for suppliers and visibility for media, while the foundation is to be provided by the corporate services.
The clarity comes from the mission: “connect people, markets, services, and opportunities under one trusted platform.” I think the vision is big, the execution needs to be disciplined step-by-step, and delegation and documentation are so important.
Q7. Why Youth Empowerment Is Personal
Youth empowerment is central to your mission. Was there a mentor, teacher, or experience in your own life that made you so committed to opening doors for the next generation?
Ambe Fidelis Ndang: This is a commitment in the eyes of Ndang because he observed in his life. My dedication as a mentor comes from myself and the many young people who are suffering due to not having guidance or access.
There have been talented individuals who lost their self-belief due to the lack of guidance, educated graduates who lost opportunities, business men with ideas but no platform.
Those experiences had a profound impact on me, if someone has had that experience, they should not close the door behind them, they must open it for others, so youth empowerment to me is not just a mission of EFG-HUB, but it is personal.
Q8. The Lowest Points — And What Kept Him Going
Entrepreneurship in emerging markets is often lonely. What has been your lowest point on this journey, and what kept you moving forward during difficult times?
Ambe Fidelis Ndang: Ndang doesn’t idealize the trip. Moments when I see clarity in my heart and may have great difficulty in communicating it but experience by others is only of the struggle and not the future.
There were times when money was tight, delays, disappointment and uncertainty, however, faith in vision, discipline and the belief that the work was bigger than me, was what kept me going.
I would try to keep myself in mind that things of substance don’t happen easily, if the reason is powerful, you do the thing and find the strength.
Q9. Beyond Business: Who Is Ambe Fidelis Ndang?
Outside of business, who is Ambe Fidelis Ndang? What do you do to recharge, stay grounded, and remain connected to the things that matter beyond work?
Ambe Fidelis Ndang: As for my outside the business life, I’m just an ordinary man who enjoys spending time with my family, being reflective, learning, and building connections.
His rest periods are calm and quiet. There are two important ways I recharge, one is taking quiet time to think, pray, plan and reconnect with my purpose, and the other is spending time with other people who inspire me and remind me of the importance of the work I’m doing.
Business is important, but humility, discipline and inner peace are even more. Without them, it’s hard to run an ecosystem which impacts on other people’s lives.
Q10. Advice to the Next Generation of African Entrepreneurs
If a young person from Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana, or anywhere in Africa reads this interview today and wants to follow a similar path, what is the most honest and practical advice you would give them?
Ambe Fidelis Ndang: “Simply begin where you begin but to begin without discipline is not to begin at all”, I say.
“Don’t wait for ideal circumstances – learn, develop yourself, know your market, value documentation, guard your reputation, be patient with the process.”
Additionally, avoid out-competing someone else without figuring out what they’re doing. Go about figuring out what it is you need to do, building your skills, and having serious people around you, and thinking beyond quick success.
His last is to the point. The future is open for Africa, but it is for those that are prepared, honest and ready to learn and build with integrity.
